SM Supermalls Brings the Spirit of Bayanihan to Schools Nationwide

SM Supermalls joins Brigada Eskwela 2026 to help create cleaner, safer, and more welcoming learning spaces

Through SM Cares, SM Supermalls supported the Department of Education’s Brigada Eskwela 2026 as part of its continuing commitment to youth empowerment, nation-building, and community service.

In time for the start of classes, participating SM teams from its most-loved malls nationwide worked hand in hand with partner schools to help create learning environments that are cleaner, safer, and more inspiring for students and teachers.

Guided by this year’s theme, “Bayanihan sa Paaralan: Nagkakaisa para sa Kaayusan at Kaalaman,” SM employee-volunteers, together with school communities, local partners, teachers, parents, and volunteers, came together to help prepare public schools for the opening of classes.

The volunteer activities included general cleaning of classrooms, corridors, and school grounds; repainting and repair of walls, furniture, and school facilities; minor repairs and carpentry work on doors, windows, desks, and chairs; landscaping and school garden care; school supply donations; and other community support efforts.

Driven by the simple but meaningful act of showing up for the children and communities it serves, SM’s involvement in this year’s Brigada Eskwela focused on the collective effort of Bayanihan to prepare spaces that not only encourage but also empower learning for the next generation.

“Our mall communities are woven into the neighborhoods around us. That is why supporting our schools is also part of our responsibility,” said [Name], [Title], SM Supermalls.

“When a child walks into a classroom that is clean, safe, and ready, it tells them that their community believes in them. Every broom sweep, every coat of paint, and every act of service matters.”

As students return to school, SM Supermalls hopes that each classroom touched by Brigada Eskwela becomes more than a place for lessons. It becomes a place where children feel seen, supported, and encouraged to dream.

Waste-Free Starts with SM Supermalls

SM Cares marks World Oceans Day 2026 with coastal cleanup efforts for a waste-free future

7,500 SM employees, volunteers, and partners mobilized for World Oceans Day 2026 to divert waste from the sea.

This World Oceans Day, SM Cares brought the SM Green Movement to shore, reminding communities that protecting the ocean begins long before waste reaches the sea.

In celebration of World Oceans Day 2026, SM Cares led coastal cleanup efforts under the banner “Empowering Communities for an SM Waste-Free Future,” mobilizing 7,500 employees, tenants, volunteers, partners, and local stakeholders to take part in shared action for cleaner coastlines and healthier marine ecosystems.

19,000 kilograms of trash were successfully diverted from the ocean, 36% less than the previous year.

The initiative formed part of SM Cares’ 2026 coastal cleanup calendar, which also includes World Water Day, International Coastal Cleanup, and National Environment Awareness Month.

For World Oceans Day, participating SM malls included SM By the Bay and nine other SM Supermalls branches across communities with access to coastal and waterway areas.

The “All For You. All For Our Oceans.” activity championed ocean protection as a shared responsibility—one that begins with people working together to keep waste out of the ocean and to care for the environments that support communities, livelihoods, and future generations.

“Protecting our oceans begins with communities choosing to act together,” said Engr. Liza B. Silerio, SM Supermalls Vice President for Corporate Compliance and SM Cares Program Director for Environment".

“Through the SM Green Movement, we hope to inspire everyday responsibility—because for every volunteer who shows up, every piece of waste removed, and every habit changed, our waste-free future is more within reach.”

Beyond the cleanup, the World Oceans Day effort also served as a platform for environmental education and community engagement. Activities highlighted proper waste segregation, responsible waste management, and the importance of preventing trash from entering waterways and coastal ecosystems.

Participating groups also included sustainability partners, schools, youth organizations, cycling groups, dive communities, environmental advocates, and local community members.

At SM By the Bay, the cleanup was supported by community-centered executions such as waste segregation demonstrations, and educational “trash talks”—helping participants see how small, practical actions can become part of everyday environmental care.

For SM Cares, coastal cleanups form an integral part of a broader commitment to bring sustainability beyond mall spaces, into the communities and ecosystems that need protection most.

Through the SM Green Movement, SM Cares continues to empower communities to protect marine life, reduce waste, and build a culture of shared responsibility—today and for generations to come.

SM Supermalls Fuels the Biggest Running Movement in the Philippines

MANILA, Philippines, June 2026 - When more than 25,000 runners took over EDSA for the historic Galaxy Manila Marathon, they were not just participating in one of the country's biggest races.

They were part of a growing movement that is transforming how Filipinos experience running.

Galaxy Manila Marathon 42km gun starts on June 12, 2026

From record-setting marathons and major race series to inclusive community runs and pet-friendly events, SM Supermalls is emerging as one of the driving forces behind Philippine running.

Through its expanding portfolio of race events and the SM Active Hub platform, SM continues to bring world-class running experiences closer to communities across the country.

Runners took on the historic EDSA route, connecting SM Mall of Asia and SM North EDSA, with the course passing SM Megamall and crossing the iconic Guadalupe Bridge before looping back to SM Mall of Asia

The Galaxy Manila Marathon marked a defining moment in that journey. For the first time, participants ran along EDSA, connecting SM Mall of Asia and SM North EDSA in a landmark race that celebrated fitness, community, and national pride.

The historic route transformed one of the country's most recognizable thoroughfares into a symbol of movement and unity, creating a race experience that captured the imagination of runners from across the Philippines and beyond.

The success of the Galaxy Manila Marathon demonstrated SM Supermalls' ability to stage large-scale sporting events while delivering memorable experiences that extend far beyond the finish line.

But the Galaxy Manila Marathon is only part of a much bigger story.

Long before the historic race took over EDSA, SM Supermalls had already been building momentum through a diverse calendar of running events.

Since the start of the year, thousands of runners have gathered at SM destinations for races such as the Earth Day Run, Star Wars Run, Doraemon Run, Women's Run PH, multiple legs of the Sante Barley Trilogy Run Asia, community fun runs, and fitness events that welcomed participants of all ages and fitness levels.

From the Star Wars Run for fans to the Pet Express Doggie Run for fur parents, SM Supermalls continues to champion inclusive running experiences that bring together communities of all ages, interests, and lifestyles.

These events showcase the breadth of SM Supermalls' running ecosystem. From themed runs that bring together pop culture fans and families, to advocacy-driven races, competitive road events, and marathon majors, SM continues to create experiences that appeal to every type of runner.

Building on that momentum, SM Supermalls continues to host and support some of the Philippines' biggest and most anticipated races, including the SM2SM Run in Cebu, Singlife Cebu International Marathon, Singlife Iloilo Marathon, HOKA Midnight Run Asia, Pride Run, Decathlon Run, Pet Express Doggie Run, Sante Trilogy Run Asia National Finals, and races under the Philippine Marathon Majors series.

Together, these events are helping establish SM Supermalls as one of the country's largest and most diverse platforms for running and active lifestyles.

Run with pride on June 21 at SM Mall of Asia and celebrate diversity, inclusivity, and community through movement. For registration details and event updates, visit the SM Mall of Asia Facebook page or RUNRIO's official channels.

Continuing the momentum, thousands of runners are expected to gather at SM Mall of Asia on June 21 for the Pride Run, one of the country's largest running events celebrating Pride Month.

Bringing together runners, allies, families, and communities, the event combines fitness, self-expression, and inclusivity in a colorful celebration of diversity.

The run reflects SM Supermalls' commitment to creating spaces where people can come together, embrace active lifestyles, and celebrate what makes every individual unique.

Together, these events are expected to attract more than 100,000 runners nationwide, reinforcing SM Supermalls' role as a major platform for running and active lifestyles.

The SM2SM Run in Cebu and the Earth Day Run reflect SM Supermalls' commitment to making running more accessible and purposeful, bringing together thousands of participants through events that champion fitness, community, and shared advocacies.

"At SM Supermalls, we see running as more than a sport. It is a platform that brings communities together, promotes healthier lifestyles, and creates meaningful experiences for Filipinos".

"Through SM Active Hub and our growing portfolio of running events, we are making active living more accessible while building destinations where people can connect, celebrate, and achieve their personal goals," said Steven Tan, President of SM Supermalls.

Women's Run PH reflects SM Supermalls' commitment to creating inclusive running experiences, empowering women through fitness while strengthening communities through shared moments of movement and achievement.

At the center of this effort is SM Active Hub, SM Supermalls' sports and fitness platform that connects communities through running events, fitness programs, training sessions, and wellness activities.

Through SM Active Hub, runners gain access to year-round experiences that support every stage of their fitness journey, from training and recovery to race-day participation and community engagement.

What sets SM Supermalls apart is its ability to create seamless race-day journeys, from registration and race expos to training, recovery, dining, shopping, and entertainment, delivering the maxed-out experiences that today's runners and families seek.

From race kit claiming to meet-and-greet moments with Doraemon, SM Supermalls delivers maxed-out experiences that extend beyond race day, creating exciting and memorable moments for participants of the Star Wars Run, Doraemon Run, and other community-driven running events.

Through its network of 90 malls nationwide, SM Supermalls has transformed running into a movement that reaches communities across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

From a historic 25,000 runners at the Galaxy Manila Marathon to more than 100,000 participants expected across its race calendar, SM Supermalls is helping shape the future of running in the Philippines.

As the country's most loved mall, SM Supermalls continues to create destinations where every finish line leads to new experiences, every race becomes a shared celebration, and every runner feels part of something bigger.

Because when the Philippines runs, it runs through SM Supermalls.

Water Finds its Second Life Through SM Green Movement's Conservation Program

MANILA, Philippines — In 2025, SM recycled 6.6 million cubic meters, or roughly 6.6 billion liters of water – an amount that is equivalent to nearly a thousand times the water consumption of Metro Manila daily.

According to the United Nations, nearly half the global population faces severe water scarcity for at least one month every year.

For SM, its year-round advocacy takes on greater urgency amid rising water scarcity concerns and a prolonged El Niño.

As climate pressures and escalating water demand intensify the strain on water resources, SM Supermalls steadfastly prioritizes water conservation and the circular use of this essential resource.

An advocacy that started 30 years ago

SM Supermalls’ initiatives began in the 1990s with the installation of a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) at SM Southmall, aimed at conserving water and protecting the environment of nearby communities.

Since then, the mall operator has expanded its water conservation efforts, with 90 malls now equipped with facilities that recycle wastewater annually.

The mall operator has also embraced innovation to help reduce flooding and enhance water recovery efforts.

SM City Baguio’s Rainwater Treatment Facility, for example, collects and treats rainwater for operational use by its tenants and kitchen facilities.

From its first day of operations in November 2022 to December 2025, the facility has processed 53,740 cubic meters of rainwater, equivalent to serving an estimated 63,706 households.

“Since the 1990s, SM has always prioritized the welfare of nearby communities and the environment. Water is a very precious resource, and we are committed to ensuring its sustainable use for the benefit of present and future generations,” said Liza B. Silerio, SM Supermalls Vice President for Corporate Compliance and Sustainability.

SM Supermalls’ integrated networks recycle waste and rainwater for non-potable applications such as cleaning, irrigation, and watering its greeneries across its properties.

Not only do the systems reduce demand for fresh water, but they also drive more sustainable and resilient operations, especially during seasonal shortages.

The institution has accelerated its water conservation initiatives in its two new malls in 2025.

SM City La Union has a 760-cubic-meter rainwater catchment system and a 543-square-meter sewage treatment plant, enabling efficient water use and enhanced wastewater management.

Meanwhile, SM City Laoag has a self-sustaining water network that converts deep well water into a potable supply.

SM Supermalls' longstanding green initiatives have garnered multiple industry distinctions, including the Bantayog ng Lawa Para sa Kalikasan from the Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA), awarded to SM Mall of Asia, and the first-ever Gawad Taga-Ilog Award bestowed upon a private entity by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to SM Prime for supporting water stewardship.

“As SM Supermalls moves forward, it will continue to pioneer environmental systems and practices across our malls. We will continue working towards a resilient, sustainable, and eco-friendly future,” said Silerio.

Over 21,000 Filipinos Benefit from SM Supermalls and DOLE's Araw ng Kagitingan Job Fairs

SM Supermalls, in collaboration with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), hosted the Araw ng Kalayaan Job Fairs throughout SM’s nationwide network of most-loved malls.

SM Supermalls, in collaboration with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), strengthened their long-standing partnership to once again transform malls into venues of opportunity, hope, and new beginnings through the nationwide Araw ng Kalayaan Job Fairs.

Mounted across 20 SM malls nationwide, the job fair brings together over 800 employers and over 21,000 job seekers, with more than 1,900 hired on the spot—highlighting the continued impact of accessible, community-based employment initiatives that help Filipinos move forward.

From fresh graduates and first-time job seekers to career shifters and experienced professionals—Filipinos gathered at SM malls this June 12 in search of meaningful employment opportunities, many of whom were interviewed and hired on the spot.

Vice President for SM Communities Marketing; Ronald Allan Brosas, SM Senior Asst. Vice President for Operations; Royce Cabunag, Asst. Vice President and Lead for SM Communities; Pasig Mayor Vico Sotto; Pasig Vice Mayor Dodot Jaworski; Councilor Simon Tantoco(in black); Councilor Boyie Raymundo; Councilor Ryan Enriquez; Councilor Warren Incencio; and Councilor Paul Senogat with representatives from SM, the Pasig city LGU, and the government sectors

By combining DOLE’s extensive labor network and employment programs with SM’s accessible community spaces, the collaboration empowered local communities—bringing jobs, crucial government support services, and future-ready skills directly to the doorsteps of everyday Filipinos.

This year’s Independence Day Job Fair also continued SM’s growing focus on workforce readiness and future-ready skills.

"By partnering with the private sector, mas naging convergent ang ating approach para mas maibigay ang serbisyo ng pamahalaan sa ating mga kababayan. Maganda ang pakiramdam na makita ang ganitong turnout at pagkakaisa lalo na ngayong Araw ng Kalayaan," shared Ryan Roberto Delos Reyes, Supervising Labor Employment Officer of DOLE NCR.

For Patrick Tamayo, who secured a position as a Mobile Promoter, the opportunity meant he could help his family.

"Masaya po ako na hired on the spot ako. Matutulungan ko na po ang pamilya ko. Hindi ko po inaasahan na mabilis po akong matatanggap," he said.

For Ma. Jamaica Pabunan, Independence Day became more than a celebration—it became an answered prayer.

"Naghahanap po talaga ako ng trabaho kaya pinagdasal ko po talaga na matanggap ako and answered prayer po," she shared after being hired on the spot as a Pharmacy Assistant. "Pangalawang job fair ko po itong napuntahan, pero iba po dito sa SM, organized po talaga."

Their stories were among the many success stories that unfolded during the SM Araw ng Kalayaan Job Fairs, mounted nationwide by SM Supermalls and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

A Partnership That Creates Opportunities

The success of the initiative reflects the enduring partnership between SM Supermalls and DOLE, united by a shared mission of making employment opportunities more accessible to Filipinos.

By combining DOLE's labor programs and employment network with SM's nationwide presence and community reach, the partnership continues to bring jobs, government services, and workforce development opportunities closer to where people live.

Across participating malls, applicants explored opportunities from industries such as retail, banking, IT-BPO, hospitality, logistics, food service, education, healthcare, and customer service.

Through face-to-face interviews, employers were able to connect directly with qualified candidates while applicants gained immediate access to job openings.

For participating employers, the event also provided an opportunity to support a larger cause. "We joined the job fair not just to fill available positions but also to be part of SM's advocacy this Araw ng Kalayaan. We know many Filipinos are looking for opportunities," shared Hermie, Talent Acquisition Specialist of Home Credit.

Lisa, Assistant Human Resource Manager of Mesco, Inc., echoed the importance of bringing multiple employers together in one accessible venue. "It's an opportunity for jobseekers to see and apply to different industries in one place. Mas malaking chances for jobseekers," she said.

From Job Fair to Career Growth Hub

This year's Independence Day Job Fair also continued SM's growing focus on workforce readiness and future-ready skills.

In partnership with TESDA, DICT, Jobstreet, and other stakeholders, selected venues featured learning opportunities in AI prompting, cybersecurity awareness, Canva basics, digital skills, and livelihood development programs.

Upskilling for the future: With the support of stakeholders like TESDA, the DICT, and Jobstreet Philippines, selected venues offered digital learning opportunities.

"Here at SM Job Fairs, we promote the freedom to grow, the freedom to upskill, and the freedom to find the job that suits you," said Dannah Majarocon, Managing Director of Jobstreet by SEEK. The impact of these learning opportunities extended beyond employment.

For Rhodora Felipe of Pasig, learning how to create doormats and potholders opened new possibilities to support her family.

"Malaking tulong po itong skills na ito sa amin dahil puwede kong gamitin ito para makatulong sa gastusin at baon ng mga bata," she shared. Linalyn Calingasan, another participant, hopes to turn her newly learned skills into a livelihood opportunity with support from local partners.

More Than a Job Search

To make the experience more convenient, SM Job Fairs also featured a One-Stop Government Service Express through participating agencies such as SSS, PhilHealth, Pag-IBIG, NBI, PESO, and other institutional partners.

Applicants were able to process employment requirements, seek guidance, and access support services in a single venue—saving both time and resources.

Jobseekers access over 800 employers in a convenient venue that assembles employment and upskilling opportunities with one-stop government services for crucial employment requirements.

This integrated approach reflects the continuing evolution of SM Job Fairs from traditional recruitment events into community platforms that connect Filipinos not only to jobs, but also to skills, services, and opportunities for long-term growth.

Creating Real Impact Nationwide

Mounted simultaneously across SM malls nationwide, the Araw ng Kalayaan Job Fairs demonstrated the power of public-private collaboration in creating meaningful opportunities for Filipino communities.

Behind every application submitted, every interview conducted, and every job offer extended is a story of determination, hope, and aspiration.

Power in public-private partnerships: Through the SM Araw ng Kalayaan Job Fairs, SM supports the DOLE’s efforts to extend employment opportunities to Filipinos all over the country through ease and convenience

1,900 jobseekers were hired on the spot in one day nationwide–adding to the growing pool of employed Filipinos thanks to strong collaborations between employers, government agencies, and essential documents and upskilling services.

For some, it meant securing their first job. For others, it meant starting over, supporting a family, or discovering new skills that could open additional sources of income.

These are the stories behind the more than 1,900 hired-on-the-spot applicants—and the reason why SM Supermalls and DOLE continue to strengthen their partnership year after year.

"Pagmalasakitan ninyo 'yung obligasyon ninyo sa kumpanya, nang sa gayon ay sila ay lumago [...] at patuloy silang maghahanap ng trabahante. [And] that is my goal. That is our vision. That is our program. To provide as many jobs as we can — jobs for everyone,” said Manila City Mayor Isko Moreno.

Because freedom is not only celebrated—it is empowered through opportunities. And when opportunities are brought closer to communities, lives are changed, families are uplifted, and the nation moves forward.

Jobseekers experience fast application to employment in just one day.

SM Supermalls and DOLE Bring Freedom Through Opportunities this Philippine Independence Day

Araw ng Kalayaan Job Fairs happening at SM Malls nationwide

Successfully hired-on-the-spot (HOTS) applicants proudly pose after securing jobs during the Araw ng Kalayaan Job Fair last year.

As the nation celebrates the 128th Philippine Independence Day, SM Supermalls and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) continue their long-standing partnership to bring meaningful employment opportunities closer to Filipinos.

This June 12, SM and DOLE will simultaneously mount Araw ng Kalayaan Job Fairs across 20 SM malls nationwide, bringing together employers, government agencies, and thousands of jobseekers in one of the country's largest coordinated Independence Day hiring initiatives.

For decades, SM and DOLE have worked hand in hand to make jobs more accessible to communities nationwide.

The strength of this partnership was evident during the Labor Day Job Fairs last May 1, when DOLE organized simultaneous job fairs in 15 SM venues, supporting more than 17,000 jobseekers and resulting in over 1,000 hired-on-the-spot (HOTS).

DOLE representatives join forces at the Labor Day Job Fair, helping bring employment opportunities and essential services closer to Filipino jobseekers nationwide.

The momentum continues in 2026. From January to May alone, the SM-DOLE partnership has already mounted 66 job fairs, served more than 57,000 jobseekers, which led to over 6,000 hired-on-the-spot, helping thousands of Filipinos take meaningful steps toward employment.

Jobs Today, Skills for Tomorrow

Beyond hiring, this year's Araw ng Kalayaan Job Fairs will also feature upskilling opportunities in partnership with DICT, TESDA, Jobstreet, and industry partners.

Job seekers can explore learning opportunities in AI, cybersecurity, digital marketing, data analytics, virtual assistance, and other in-demand skills designed to improve employability and prepare them for the future of work.

SM, DOLE, and partners cut the ribbon to open the Labor Day job fair last May 1.

Real Opportunities. Real Stories.

Behind every successful job fair are stories of hope and transformation.

For SM Supermalls, the impact goes beyond filling vacancies. "Through our Job Fairs, we create access to jobs, skills, and brighter futures.

Every applicant hired, and every opportunity created, reflects our commitment to helping Filipinos move forward," SM Executive Vice President Joaquin San Agustin shared.

More Than a Job Fair

The Independence Day Job Fairs are designed as a one-stop employment hub.

Beyond job opportunities, applicants can access government support services from NBI, SSS, PhilHealth, Pag-IBIG, DOLE, and PESO offices, and other partner agencies, helping streamline employment requirements and make the application process faster and more convenient.

Jobseekers are encouraged to bring multiple copies of their resume, valid IDs, a ballpen, and relevant credentials. Many participating employers will conduct on-the-spot interviews and may offer immediate hiring opportunities.

SM Supermalls Taps as First Mall Operator to Roll Out DOE's Oras Natin sa Efficiency (ONE) Effort

SM Supermalls and the Department of Energy lead the launch of the O.N.E. (Oras Natin sa Efficiency) campaign at the SM Mall of Asia Globe, promoting collective action for energy efficiency nationwide.

(L-R) Director Patrick T. Aquino, CESO III, Energy Utilization Management Bureau (EUMB), Department of Energy, Mr. Joaquin L. San Agustin, Executive Vice President for Marketing, SM Supermalls, Assistant Secretary Mandy Romero, Department of Energy, Ms. Nicole Cordovez, Binibining Pilipinas Grand International 2016, Secretary Sharon S. Garin, Department of Energy, Honorable Imelda G. Calixto-Rubiano, Pasay City Mayor, Engr. Junias M. Eusebio, Vice President for Mall Operations, SM Supermalls, Undersecretary Mario C. Marasigan, Department of Energy, Ms. Mhicaela "Bella" Belen, and Ms. Pauline Gaston.

SM joined the Department of Energy (DOE) in rolling out O.N.E.: Oras Natin sa Efficiency, a nationwide energy efficiency movement that calls on Filipinos to turn awareness into action through simple, collective energy-saving habits.

Launched through a ceremonial switch-off event at the Mall of Asia Globe, the campaign champions the importance of responsible energy use amid the country’s State of National Energy Emergency, declared under Executive Order No. 110, s. 2026, which cites geopolitical tensions and supply disruptions as critical threats to national energy security.

Department of Energy Secretary Sharon Garin delivers the keynote message during the launch of the O.N.E. (Oras Natin sa Efficiency) campaign at SM Mall of Asia, reinforcing the call for collective action toward energy efficiency nationwide.

The O.N.E. campaign, anchored on the message “One Hour, One Energy, One Nation,” encourages coordinated energy reduction as a shared national habit. For SM, this means participating in an energy reduction window where participating properties will switch off non-essential lights and reduce unnecessary energy use.

During the ceremony, SM expressed its support for DOE’s call for energy responsibility, emphasizing that energy security is a shared concern that affects homes, businesses, communities, and the daily lives of millions of Filipinos.

Engr. Junias M. Eusebio, Vice President for Mall Operations of SM Supermalls, highlights the company’s operational commitment to energy efficiency in support of the Department of Energy’s O.N.E. (Oras Natin sa Efficiency) campaign at SM Mall of Asia.

“At first, one hour may seem small. One switch turned off. One appliance unplugged. One light dimmed. But when many people do it together, across homes, malls, offices, and communities, that one hour becomes something bigger."

"It becomes a shared habit. It becomes a national effort. It becomes a reminder that each of us has a role to play in protecting our country’s energy future,” said Junias M. Eusebio, Vice President for Operations, SM Supermalls.

As part of its operational commitment, SM will assign energy officers to monitor participation and report actual energy savings to the DOE.

The initiative will also include switching off non-essential lights, such as pylons, façade lighting, and decorative displays, during the designated reduction window, with proper coordination and monitoring across participating properties.

Beyond the ceremonial switch-off, SM emphasized that the campaign is about building lasting habits.

Through its nationwide network of most-loved malls, SM will continue to share DOE-provided energy-efficiency tips and informational materials with tenants, employees, customers, and millions of daily visitors—encouraging them to carry these practices beyond the mall and into their homes and workplaces.

Pasay City Mayor Imelda G. Calixto-Rubiano expresses support for the O.N.E. (Oras Natin sa Efficiency) campaign at SM Mall of Asia, underscoring the vital role of local government units in advancing energy efficiency and sustainability efforts.

“It is not just about one hour. It is about what that one hour teaches us. That energy efficiency can be practical. That sustainability can be part of everyday life. That small habit, when shared by many, can help move a nation forward,” Tan added.

The O.N.E. campaign also aligns with SM Cares’ long-term environmental advocacy and the broader SM Green Movement, which promotes responsible energy use, climate action, and everyday sustainability practices.

SM continues to strengthen its sustainability efforts through energy-efficient operations, solar initiatives, and EV charging efforts across its properties.

Through its support for DOE’s O.N.E. campaign, SM reinforces the role of the private sector in helping strengthen national energy responsibility—showing that even the smallest actions, when done together and repeated consistently, can create meaningful impact.

Together, one hour can count for one nation.

Building Smarter, Greener Cities: The Sustainability Vision of SM Supermalls

The mall operator continues to pioneer eco-friendly programs

MANILA, Philippines — SM Supermalls’ quest to create a more sustainable, greener planet began in the 1990s with the installation of a wastewater treatment plant at SM Southmall.

The pioneering initiative, which recycles wastewater for irrigation and sanitary systems, laid the foundation for the company’s long-standing drive toward environmental stewardship and resource conservation.

The man behind the concept was Mr. Hans Sy, the current Chairman of the Executive Committee of SM Prime Holdings.

Apart from his business acumen, Mr. Sy is regarded within the community as a champion of environmental sustainability, believing that business growth and environmental responsibility should go hand in hand.

Mr. Sy’s groundbreaking vision has been deeply ingrained in how SM Supermalls are designed and managed.

Over the years, the institution has launched industry-first programs that focus on waste management, water conservation, energy efficiency, and air quality — all of which have helped improve environmental conditions and the quality of life in surrounding communities.

SM Supermalls’ enduring commitment to sustainability was already in motion before the Securities and Exchange Commission’s mandate for publicly listed companies and large non-listed entities to submit sustainability disclosures, effective in fiscal year 2026.

Its water conservation efforts have recycled approximately 6.6 million cubic meters of wastewater — equivalent to almost 3,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools — across its malls annually.

In SM Baguio specifically, over 19,000 cubic meters of rainwater have been recycled for kitchen and operational use, benefiting adjacent communities by conserving valuable water.

Moreover, its Trash To Cash Recycling Market has collected approximately 1.5 million kilograms of recyclables every year, and has continuously encouraged patrons to visit their most-loved SM Supermall to join the movement toward waste segregation.

Its energy management initiatives have seamlessly woven form and function into its SkyGardens and open spaces, which provide natural ventilation and have drastically improved air quality for its patrons.

Over the last few years, the mall operator has been leading the charge towards eco-friendly power options. It currently has an estimated 200,000 solar panels on 65 hectares of rooftops across its properties.

The vast energy system powers mall operations while reducing the overall carbon footprint. The initiative has equipped SM Supermalls amid pressures to seek alternative energy sources during the energy crisis.

SM Supermalls is continuously expanding its electric-vehicle charging infrastructure to support the shift to sustainable mobility networks. It currently has 160 EV charging stations across its malls, with plans to scale up.

And as it moves forward, SM Supermalls will continue to pioneer innovative solutions that aim to create long-term positive impact for future generations. It will leverage its decades-long pledge to help shape greener, more resilient urban spaces.

Sustainability will remain at the core of SM Supermalls’ vision. As it broadens its footprint across the country, so will its commitment to strengthening the well-being of nearby communities.

Successful Job Fair at SM Dasmariñas Builds Momentum for Nationwide "Araw ng Kalayaan" Event

SM Supermalls and its valued partners successfully mounted the SM Group Job Fair at SM City Dasmariñas last May 27, bringing together aspiring applicants, employers, and career opportunities under one accessible venue.

Thousands of jobseekers gather at SM City Dasmariñas during the SM Retail Job Fair, opening doors to new careers and brighter opportunities for Filipinos.

The one-day hiring event drew strong participation from jobseekers across Cavite and nearby areas, connecting applicants to career openings from some of the country’s most recognized retail and service brands.

Participating employers included Ace Hardware, Watsons, SM Store, SM Supermarket, SM Appliance Center, Sports Central, Toy Kingdom, Savemore, Alfamart, Goldilocks, National University, and many more under the SM Group.

More than 1,000 job seekers attended the event, interviewing with more than 20 companies offering opportunities across retail, operations, merchandising, customer service, finance, marketing, warehouse operations, pharmacy, and management roles.

More than 140 were hired on the spot (HOTS) with several hundreds more for follow-up interviews beyond the job fair. This reflects the event’s immediate impact in helping Filipinos move closer to meaningful employment.

Successful applicants celebrate their hired-on-the-spot (HOTS) moments after securing new career opportunities at the SM Retail Job Fair.

For many attendees, the event became more than just a job fair—it became an opportunity for a fresh start and a brighter future.

One hired-on-the-spot (HOTS) applicant shared how the SM Job Fair gave them renewed hope and confidence in finding meaningful work.

“Thanks, God! Kasi natanggap din naman agad ako at hindi ako nahirapan. Anong oras palang uuwi na ako kasi tanggap na ako. And this is my first time kasi umattend ng job fair. And hindi ako na disappoint kasi napaka accommodating ng staff kamo. At saka ambabait pa,” shared Marissa Orias Urbano, hired at Toy Kingdom.

Applicants line up early at the SM Retail Job Fair in search of fresh starts, meaningful work, and future opportunities.

Some successful hires plan to use their income to fund their education. Marcelo P. Magboo III who was hired at SM Appliance Center shared that he stopped his college education for almost two years because of financial problems.

He participated in the SM Job Fair, “napagisip-isip ko po ngayon na, bakit hindi po ako magtrabaho para makapag-aral ulit… Masaya po (na natanggap), tumaas po yung chance na makapag-aral ako ulit. Thank you SM for giving me a chance to get a job… magkakaroon na ako ng pambayad sa sarili kong pag-aaral.”

Government and institutional partners also emphasized the importance of bringing opportunities closer to communities through accessible employment platforms.

From resumes to real opportunities—jobseekers connect directly with leading employers during the SM Retail Job Fair at SM City Dasmariñas.

Companies also shared how SM job fairs allowed them to more easily connect with talents and fill-up their vacancies. “Sobrang nakaka-overwhelm… andaming tao.

Yung mga area na meron akong vacancy dito, around Dasma, Imus, and Bacoor… super happy kasi na filled-in na.

So, may mga na hired on the spot kami. Thank you so much SM Dasmariñas. Sana marami pang job fair,” shared Daniela Capistrano, Talent Acquisition Officer from Goldilocks Bakeshop Inc.

Initiatives like the SM Job Fairs help bridge jobseekers to immediate employment opportunities while making the process more accessible and community-based.

Meanwhile, DICT highlighted the importance of digital readiness and future-ready learning as part of today’s evolving workforce landscape through their booths.

The initiative was made possible through strong collaboration among SM Supermalls, SM Retail, Jobstreet, PSAC Jobs, PCCI, ECOP, PHILEXPORT, PESO, LGUs, DICT, and other institutional partners committed to supporting employment generation and workforce development.

One-Stop Job Application Experience

SM Job Fairs also integrate government support services to help streamline the hiring process for applicants.

Participating agencies—including the Social Security System (SSS), PhilHealth, Pag-IBIG, and other government partners—help applicants process essential employment requirements on-site, making the experience faster, easier, and more accessible.

This collaboration between government, industry, and private sector partners reflects a shared mission of helping more Filipinos move forward through employment and lifelong learning.

The successful turnout at SM City Dasmariñas also builds momentum for the upcoming nationwide Araw ng Kalayaan Job Fairs this June 12 across participating SM malls nationwide.

This year’s Independence Day Job Fairs will go beyond traditional hiring by integrating digital upskilling and future-ready learning opportunities in partnership with DICT, TESDA, Jobstreet, and local government partners.

Main event activities will be highlighted at SM City East Ortigas, featuring digital upskilling sessions and participation from Pasig City local government and various institutional partners.

Partnerships between government, industry, and private sector groups help create more accessible employment opportunities for Filipinos.

Applicants can also look forward to learning opportunities focused on AI, digital productivity, cybersecurity awareness, and workplace readiness—supporting not only immediate employment, but long-term career growth in today’s evolving workforce.
